We’re excited to introduce the Minimus Image Creator in private preview. Now, with the Minimus Image Creator, you can generate custom images directly from the Minimus web console that have all the same benefits as the standard Minimus images pulled from the Image Gallery.
Creating and maintaining custom container images has traditionally been painful. Developers might strip down existing images or hand-roll their own from scratch, but the bigger challenge is long-term maintenance. Keeping them patched and up-to-date while ensuring your sources for the packages are continually updated is no easy task.
While Minimus’ gallery contains hundreds of minimal, secure images, one thing we’ve consistently heard from our customers is the need for customization, whether to include development tooling or additional application packages. Now, with Image Creator, that customization is simple and easy.
The Minimus Image Creator enables you to select a Minimus image as a starting point and layer on customizations for their specific environment or application build.
Minimus’ package universe contains over 20,000 packages, continuously monitored and rebuilt from source. With the Image Creator, you can pull directly from the package universe to create custom images that are:
The images are repeatable and customizable, allowing you to tailor them to meet your specific needs while leveraging the same infrastructure as every other Minimus image.
Because these images utilize the Minimus package universe and our hardened base images, they gain access to the latest upstream updates, are compiled directly from source, and benefit from the hardening that Minimus applies to all of our secure, minimal images.
Getting started is simple. From inside the image creator in the Minimus dashboard, you can select any Minimus base image as a foundation.
Next, you can browse the Minimus packages and choose exactly what you need to add on top of the base image. Minimus packages are built from the upstream source, so they are always compatible with what you’re using today.
Once selected, the image creator automatically compiles the image, producing a consistent build that has the same hardening and 97% CVE reduction out of the box as any standard Minimus image.
With Image Creator, you can quickly build secure, customized container images that have all the benefits of standard Minimus images: reduced attack surface, nearly zero CVEs, and significantly improved MTTC and MTTR.
